FOREVER MY LOVE

In 1976, Alan Tang starred with Brigitte Lin in the romantic drama Forever My Love which was also called Maple Tree Love.

The Story

Alan Tang plays an engineering student in Taipei, Taiwan who meets and falls in love with another college student played by Brigitte Lin. Tang is the rich spoiled playboy son of a weathy builder. When he meets Brigitte, Tang's life changes and he becomes very serious about her. There are many wonderful romantic scenes between the two on the beach and in the country under a maple tree.

Tang's father disapproves of Brigitte since her mother was never married. He wants better for this son and tries to break the pair up by introducing his son to a beautiful fashion designer. When this doesn't work, Tang's father meets with Brigitte and her mother. He insults the mother and convinces the two to leave Taipei.

In spite of his father's strenuous disapproval, Tang's love for Brigitte prevails, and he follows her back to her country home. With some effort, Tang convinces Brigitte of his love and they are married at the local church. The pair then returns to Taipei where Tang studies to complete his degree and Brigitte works. Tang refuses to see or accept help from his father. The couple are very poor but happy and independent.

Tang develops headaches, blurry vision and periods of dizziness. He seeks medical help and is told he needs an operation for a brain tumor. He does not tell Brigitte and puts this off so he can finish his degree.

Meanwhile the father seeks out Brigitte and tries to reconcile with the pair. Tang is stubborn and wants no part of his father, choosing to remain independent.

WARNING CONCLUSION: After graduation, Tang's medical situation becomes worse and he loses his sight. Because he has waited so long, the tumor is large and chances for a full recovery slim. Tang decides not to have the operation fearing he will become an idiot. He acts rather strangely and refuses to listen to either Brigitte or her mother. Brigitte then goes to Tang's father for help in convincing him to have the operation.

Tang still refuses to have the operation until his father in desparation slaps him and challenges him to be a man. The operation takes place. Several years later, on a construction site, Tang is seen meeting a very pregnant Brigitte who is carrying their other baby in her arms. The two are obviously very happy and the operation was clearly successful.
